With his formidable Kung Fu skills, Lee totally crushes the city gangsters. Price: Enter the Dragon 1973 Bruce Lee was immortalized in his films as a martial arts master and first-class entertainer. ENTER THE DRAGON was the first martial arts film that American audiences had witnessed, and was actually produced in both Hong Kong and Hollywood. Interestingly, ENTER THE DRAGON also set the stage for non-traditional, culturally specific narratives to make their way into Hollywood. Bruce Lee plays a kung fu master recruited by a foreign government to infiltrate the island of a megalomaniac martial artist named Han. Han's bodyguard is also found to have killed Lee's sister, giving Lee a personal vendetta to fight for. The Hall of Mirrors sequence towards the end of the film is now famous, as are Lee's incredibly gymnastic martial arts abilities. This trend-setting film holds up as an entertaining, engaging action movie, more than 30 years later. Price: Dirty Harry A tremendously controversial film, both decried as an apologia for fascism and hailed as the solution to a decade of rising crime, DIRTY HARRY propelled Clint Eastwood's career into the stratosphere while adding another archetype to join his Man with No Name in film iconography. Clint stars as Harry Callahan, a truculent San Francisco police detective well known for his vicious take-no-prisoners attitude toward criminals. With the city of San Francisco being terrorized by the psychotic killer known only as Scorpio (Andrew Robinson), Harry is assigned by the mayor (John Vernon) and Lt. Bressler (Harry Guardino) to try to stop him, pairing him with reluctantly accepted new partner Chico (Reni Santoni). Scorpio kidnaps a 14-year-old girl and buries her alive, demanding a $200,000 ransom for her return. Harry is to bring him the money--alone. What follows is one of the most exciting ransom deliveries in film history. The prototype for most of the action films through the rest of the century, DIRTY HARRY rises far above most of them due mostly to an excellent script and Eastwood's gripping acting. That said, the main character's contemptuous attitude toward the Miranda law seems far more damning now that it did in the early 1970s Price: Porky's 1983 A bunch of sex-mad teenagers are drawn toward the delights on offer at 'Porky's' backwater nightclub. After being ejected they become hell-bent on revenge Price: Operation Condor Agent Jackie is hired to find WWII Nazi gold hidden in the Sahara desert. He teams up with three bundling women (the 3 stooges?) who are all connected in some way. However a team of mercenries have ideas on the ownership of the gold. A battle / chase ensues as to who gets there first. Lots of choregraphed Kung-Fu and quirky Chan humour. Price: Gorky Park 1983 When three faceless corpses are discovered in Moscow's Gorky Park, the Moscow militia's top investigator, Arkady Renko (William Hurt), is assigned to the case. An honest Soviet official, Renko uncovers a murky and dangerous plot involving sinister KGB agents, the corrupt Soviet government, and a powerful American businessman. Although many of the Russians in the film speak with an English accent (all the dialogue is in English), GORKY PARK proves to be a provocative, fast-paced thriller that captures all of the intrigue and suspense in Martin Cruz Smith's best-selling novel of the same name. Director Michael Apted handled the thriller genre before in SQUEEZE and AGATHA, and the experience shows in GORKY PARK; there are so many twists and turns in the plot, viewers are constantly kept off balance. A supporting cast of Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, and Joanna Pacula (in her first starring role) back up Hurt with solid performances. Price: Mary Reilly In this moody and melodramatic revision of the classic horror tale, based on the novel by Valerie Martin, the Jekyll and Hyde saga is told from the point of view of the doctor's long-time maid, Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts). Despite Mary's close collaboration with the staid Dr. Jekyll (John Malkovich) and her fascination with his charming "assistant" Hyde, she is unable to realize their true nature until too late. Price: Phantoms Unspeakable horrors have mysteriously befallen the whole town of Snowfield, Colorado, leaving behind only a few mangled body parts and unanswered questions. Enter two vacationing sisters and a sheriff and deputy from a nearby town, who try to piece things together with the help of a scientist-turned-tabloid hack. But will they unravel the mystery of the monstrous subterranean killing force before they become its prey? Adapted by Dean Koontz from his own novel. Price: The Andromeda Strain ANDROMEDA STRAIN, is alien in nature, and the scientists must quickly find a cure before all of humanity is wiped out. Quietly thrilling, with superb pacing from director Robert Wise, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, based on the novel by Michael Crichton, is one of the most stylistically beautiful science fiction films ever made. Price: The Juror A single mom on jury duty finds more than justice at stake as the mob boss who's on trial hires a seductive heavy to convince her to swing the trial his way--or else. Price: Sometimes They Come Back..For More Two military officers enter a world of horror when they investigate a serious of mysterious deaths that has occurred in a remote Antarctica-based government outpost. Price: 8MM (Description coming) Army of Darkness In this sequel to the Evil Dead films, a discount-store employee ("Name's Ash. Housewares.") is time-warped to a medieval castle beset by monstrous forces. Initially mistaken for an enemy, he is soon revealed as the prophecised savior who can quest for the Necronomicon, a book which can dispel the evil. Unfortunately, he screws up the magic words while collecting the tome, and releases an army of skeletons, led by his own Deadite counterpart. What follows is a thrilling, yet tongue-in-cheek battle between Ash's 20th Century tactics and the minions of darkness. Price: Dante's Peak A volcanologist forlorn over the loss of his wife in the Mt. Pinatubo eruption arrives at a small Pacific Northwest town to investigate the rumblings of the local dormant volcano. Though he instantly fears the worse, he must convince the skeptical... Price: Day Light DAYLIGHT is everything you'd expect it to be as it joins the genre of disaster films of the seventies. Sylvester Stallone is a noble, almost saintly, hero, and we get a mixed bag of trapped people in the Holland Tunnel. Director Rob Cohen wisely focuses on the disaster and its aftermath and leaves the stereotypical characters to respond in expected ways. But what a cataclysmic set of special effects! The car crashes and resultant explosions are terrific and incredibly filmed. That alone is one reason to watch the film. Much of Stallone's heroics are implausible, but in a film like this, we are indeed holding out for a hero. The supporting cast is eclectic and adequate: a pre Lord of the Rings Viggo Mortensen is some kind of adventurer whose self-importance is his downfall; Jay O. Sanders, Karen Young and Danielle Harris are the troubled family; Stan Shaw is the heroic but doomed cop; Dan Hedaya is the loyal ex-partner; Amy Brenneman is the frustrated writer who becomes Stallone's romantic interest; the lovely Claire Bloom and Colin Fox are the elderly couple with the dog; and even Stallone's son, Sage, gets in on the action. Nothing new here, folks, but it is well done and the effects are awesome. Price: The Langoliers Ten passengers on a red-eye flight from L.A. to Boston fall hopelessly out of sync with their own time. Based on the novella from "Four Past Midnight" by Stephen King. Price: Aliens Ripley is rescued after years of hibernation in space and reluctantly drawn into a second encounter with the deadly xenomorphs, this time as part of a gung-ho platoon of narines. Price: Alien Resurrection 200 years after the conclusion of Alien 3, the company is able to resurrect Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) through the process of cloning and the scientists successfully take the Queen Alien out of her. But, Ripley's DNA gets mixed up with the Queen's and she begins to develop certain alien characteristics. The scientists begin breeding the aliens, but they later escape. Soon the Xeno-morphs are running amok on the ship, which is on course to earth. The Queen then gives birth to a deadly new breed of alien, which could spell disaster for the entire human race. It's up to Ripley and a band of space pirates to stop the ship before it reaches earth. Price: Aliens Three In this grim third installment of the ALIEN films, Lt. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) crash lands on a prison planet and soon discovers an alien is aboard her craft. Mutilated bodies pile up, but this time she has no weapons to fight the marauding creature. Once again her toughness is tested to the max, in a bleaker episode than the previous two in the series. The film is directed with visual flair by David Fincher (SEVEN, FIGHT CLUB). Price: Arrival Zane, an astronomer discovers intelligent alien life. But the aliens are keeping a deadly secret, and will do anything to stop Zane from learning it. Price: National Lampoon's Vacation Join the Griswolds, a typical suburban family, on their summer vacation, a cross-county trip to their favorite amusement park, Walley World. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong in this outrageous farce, featuring the comic genius of Chevy Chase as the desperate dad looking for fun and Beverly D'Angelo as his willing wife. As they wind their way across the country, the Griswolds are forced to survive a series of absurd events and wacky detours. By the time they finally reach the gates of Walley World, they are more desperate for fun than ever. Price: Scrooged (3) Frank is a network TV President and also a modern-day Mr Bah Humbug. Always looking out for number one, the stingy, uncaring Frank places everyone else last. But his holiday spirit changes when he is visited by three zany ghosts. Price: A Nightmare on Elm Street In the dreams of his victims, a specteral child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him. Price: A Nightmare on Elm Street III As Freddy Krueger continues his murdering, the kids, led by Freddie's main opponent in the first film, prepare to fight back. Price: A Nightmare on Elm Street IV This fourth trip down Freddy Lane was the most successful at the box-office, but although it has some impressive visuals, it is mostly an empty film. Credit must go to the effects team for some fine work, but otherwise, this entry from the director of Cutthroat Island (Renny Harlin) is extremely weak. Roland Kincaid falls asleep and awakens in the Springwood junkyard, where his dog -- named "Jason" in a sad foreshadowing of the film's giggly tone -- pees fire on Freddy's grave. The pyro-urinary baptism causes Krueger (Robert Englund) to reassemble from bones outward in an admittedly impressive sequence. Predictably, Freddy guts Kincaid, then appears in Joey's waterbed as a naked pinup girl (Hope-Marie Carlton) before slicing him to ribbons. And so it goes. The film has a few interesting ideas kicking around, but no real identification points. This is a video game, not a movie, and the characters seem to exist only in order to move the film from one effects sequence to another. Price: BeetleJuice In the surreal, wonderfully cartoon-like comedy BEETLEJUICE, a childless couple, Barbara and Adam (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), move to the country only to be killed in a car accident while passing over a quaint covered bridge. Their ghosts return to their beloved Victorian home, and find the HANDBOOK FOR THE RECENTLY DECEASED, which not only lets them know they're dead, but comes in handy when they learn that they can continue to live in their house, even though a new family--from the land of the living--is moving in. The new owners, fresh from the city, are quite a strange group themselves, and include the overpowering hipster mom Delia (Catherine O'Hara), her pompous SoHo interior designer Otho (Glenn Shadix), her meek husband Charles (Jeffrey Jones), and their morose teenage daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder), who befriends the ghostly couple. Though the threesome attempt to scare Delia from ruining the house with redecoration and her unpleasant personality, their attempts fail. As a last resort, they call upon the services of the demented, terrifying, but hilarious "bioexorcist," "Beetlejuice" (Michael Keaton). Director Tim Burton scores big with witty site gags, incredible special effects and sets, and a unique ensemble of characters. BEETLEJUICE is a visually inventive and imaginative comedy taken to a uniquely grotesque and funny level by the manic performance of Michael Keaton in the title role.
