Raggedy Ann and
Andy  books written by
Johnny Gruelle
Although Volland did not
publish the first book,
"Raggedy Ann's Stories"
until 1918. Johnny Gruelle
actually filed the patent
application in May of
1915, months before
Marcella became ill and
died from complications of
a vaccination. Her death,
understandably, devastated
the family and according to
Gruelle, the Raggedy Ann
Stories were the stories he
used to tell his daughter.
And his books and
illustrations have been a
wonderful tribute, keeping
her memory alive for over
85 years.

Gruelle was a very
talented artist, both
before and after the
debut of Raggedy Ann.
But of all his work,
these dolls and stories
have truly withstood the
sands of time, have
survived intact, and are
still a very popular
licensed item.
Cleaning Your Old
Raggedy's

"Raggedy Ann, Oh
Raggedy Ann, My Sweet
Raggedy Ann,
Here You Sit All Torn And
Tattered,
But, You Were There
When It Really Mattered!

Cleaning  of the older
(pre-1960) cloth dolls is
not recommended. .
The  fabric is weaker
than the washable
fabrics of today.
Washing could speed up
any normal decaying of
the fabric. Rubbing too
hard could also rip the
fabric.  It is best to leave
these old things as they
are.  Remember,
Raggedy's hold the
memories of past
childhoods. Respect
these  stains for the love
and adventures they
now  represent of  little
girls and their dolls so
long ago.

Post 1960's Dolls. .
Some tags on the dolls
will indicate that you
can "wash in a washing
machine".  If you do
so, keep in mind that
this may not work
very well, being that
the yarn hair could
come lose and the
colors may bleed out.

Other tags indicate
"surface cleaning only".
Try using a mild carpet
or upholstery clearner
and a clean white rag.
Apply a small amount
of foam on the rag and
rug every so lightly on
the soiled area, being
careful not to tear
cloth.  Do not allow to
dry naturally! Blow
dry the damp area.
Otherwise you risk
water stains!
Cleaning the Clothing:
I recommend COLD
WATER and Hand
Wash only. Hang to
dry. Do not squeeze or
ring out excess water.
Just flatten the fabric
and hang. When dry,
lightly iron out
wrinkles.
Warning: Washing in
warm or hot water may
shrink, fade or
otherwise ruin the
garment. Some of the
older colored fabrics
may not be colorfast
and actually bleed over
onto other clothing.
